How The World Works

Scientific Explorers

On our return to school, following the Lunar New Year Holiday, we will be delving into our new unit, How the World Works. This Unit of Inquiry provides children with a wonderful opportunity to explore science and math concepts through active investigation and inquiry-based learning. By encouraging children to observe, question, and experiment, they can develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

During this unit, children can engage in various activities and investigations to explore the principles of science and math. Here are a few examples of the direction this may take us in:

1. Science Experiments: We will be conducting a variety of simple experiments to enhance our understanding of how the world works. This could be anything from exploring the properties of water by conducting buoyancy experiments, to building and erupting a classroom volcano.

2. Math Investigations: We can explore mathematical concepts through real-world applications. This could be through investigating patterns in nature, measuring and comparing objects, or exploring shapes and symmetry in our environment.

3. Incursion: In a couple of weeks we will be welcoming some guest scientists who will carry out some investigations with us and teach us more about what its like to be a real life scientist.

4. Collaborative Projects: We will be encouraging the dolphins to work in groups on projects related to the unit that can foster teamwork and problem-solving skills. For example, they could design and build simple machines or create models to explain scientific phenomena.

Throughout the unit, it's crucial to provide opportunities for children to reflect on their learning, ask questions, and share their theories and findings with their peers. This helps to develop their critical thinking and communication skills.

We have begun dipping our toes into the learning pool already with one of our Open Play activities. In Panda class, the children have had the chance to dress up in lab coats and safety goggles, whilst experimenting with colour mixing using test tubes and pipettes. This will continue following the LNY break and will be paired with a scientific art activity involving water and oil.

Chinese New Year

Our wonderful Chinese teachers organised some fun Chinese New Year activities for us to take part in during Open Play over the last two weeks. It was great to have our parent volunteers in last week, helping us out with lion dances, searching for lucky money in the sandpit, throwing hoops over Chinese blessings in the playground, creating cherry blossom and orange trees in the Frog classroom, and eating dimsum in the Monkey classroom.

As a special treat, we were able to go over to Bradbury School to watch the big kids perform a combined lion and dragon dance. All of the dolphins showed their courageous side as we took our seats in the large school hall. Soon the drums were pounding and the cymbals were clashing as the colourful animals danced across the stage. Check out your class album for some videos of the performance!

Kung Hei Fat Choi, Gong Xi Fa Cai, and Happy New Year! Wishing you all a wonderful year of the snake
