K1 Dolphin Class

Dear Families, Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our classroom activities. Over the past few weeks, we have been exploring the themes of winter and Lunar New Year celebrations. The children have enjoyed observing the changes in our environment during winter, particularly through outdoor discussions and play.  We even "saw" the wind by watching crepe paper strips dance in the air!  Additionally, we learned about staying warm in winter and discovered the Chinese names for various winter clothes through the story "外面真冷啊“ (It's Cold Outside!). As we celebrated the Lunar New Year, we focused on traditional customs and cultural activities. The children learned key phrases, such as "新年好“ (Happy New Year), ”红包“ (Red Packet), and "巡游“ (Parade) through stories like ”春节“ (Spring Festival) and ”新年大巡游“ (Lunar New Year Parade).  They created beautiful tangerine artwork to enhance the festive atmosphere and learned the song ”恭喜恭喜“ (Kung Hei Kung Hei)...

Scientific Explorers  On our return to school, following the Lunar New Year Holiday, we will be delving into our new unit, How the World Works.  This Unit of Inquiry provides children with a wonderful opportunity to explore science and math concepts through active investigation and inquiry-based learning. By encouraging children to observe, question, and experiment, they can develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. During this unit, children can engage in various activities and investigations to explore the principles of science and math. Here are a few examples of the direction this may take us in: 1. Science Experiments: We will be conducting a variety of simple experiments to enhance our understanding of how the world works. This could be anything from exploring the properties of water by conducting buoyancy experiments, to building and erupting a classroom volcano.  2. Big Learning Moments  Meeting the K2s From Week 5 onwards, we will start combining our playground time with the K2 classes. This joint, or community, play provides a great opportunity for both year groups to learn from one another. For the K2 children, its a chance for them to become teachers and to share their skills and knowledge with the younger students. For the K1 children, they are able to observe more developed play skills, particularly when it comes to group collaboration in play.  Over the last couple of weeks, the Dolphins have been going down to the playground early so that we can catch the end of the K2's Open Play.
